Advertisement and Privacy

Privacy is the largest concern for the public that uses internet which is almost everyone. Every time a user logs into a website and click a certain link or ad that information is being stored and monitored by software that created by programmers to benefit corporations to create more efficient advertisements. Doing this creates a bubble for the user that they are never exposed to new things because the advertisers will design the most profitable ads to that specific user, tailoring it down to their likes. Being in a bubble for a user is bad for their development of knowledge. A whole society of users under a bubble will lead to lack of improvement and advancement in the world. The use of this information leads to unfair gain to the companies that can design and tailor ads to users that effectively gets them to buy their product. If a user buys into the ads 50% more of time if the ad is using the logos appeal than the advertisers will use that against them. Leading to bigger profit margins to them while consumers get the short end of the stick. Majorly of consumers that purchase products do so in the comfort of their home and they deserve to not be disturbed or tracked by unknown people just as a person has a right to privacy in their own home. A simple solution to stop people from watching you undress or do things in your room would be to close your blinds but it is not the case on the internet. But it should be, there should be a feature in all internet browsers that simply puts blinds on your internet habits. This way a user can choose to be tracked or not but based on their own choice not the option of a website that usually say "do you wish for google to track you?"

  1. Hi, Raymond! I totally agree with you: “A simple solution to stop people from watching you undress or do things in your room would be to close your blinds but it is not the case on the internet.”
Sometimes I think that the Internet is live net. It is wanted to have you lake a person who is working, loading files, blogs, stories, photos. And you do. But one day you can recognize that somebody use your information for tracing. Sometimes is OK, if you are writer, businessman, artist, and so on. But It would be not good, if somebody begins to tell lie and works against you. It could be bad. Anyway, I like Internet. It helps me in my studying and in my work. Raymond, thank you for your post.

  2. You make a really good point. I find it interesting that you did not completely dismiss the internet's invasive mannerisms. Instead, you suggest that there should be restrictions and limitations established. I agree with you here. However, I do not think it is practical. The internet has become much too convoluted for regular users to exercise discretionary privacy. There are too many loopholes, traps, and ploys employed by hackers and advertisers that render a compromise between privacy and internet usage moot.

  3. I never thought about how these informational bubbles that are created by internet advertising could prevent the flow of new knowledge. Kudos for making the point. This one factor alone makes me really reconsider some previous standpoints I had on the issue. I think that limiting potential knowledge gain is crippling to the power of the individual. With the internet growing and becoming one of our biggest knowledge resources, we cannot allow something to hinder us from reaching that information. I’ve made multiple statements regarding the need for the individual to be aware of what they are presented. Now I want to share the message that they should also be aware of what they are not presented.

Sadly Raymond there is no such thing where you tell Google not to track you. A mere like on facebook is tracked and informed to the retailers. This is an endless cycle. Always you will find that this advertisement cycle will benefit the corporation and actually cause harm to the consumers. People might think that discounts being given are a good thing but they are unaware that such discounts risked their privacies. Most people are unaware of such advertisement tactics that they are being tracked. I agree that the bubble being created will not let us advance as a society. People are just exposed to what other people are constantly liking. Nothing new is therefore put forth sadly.
